The Rhode Island Department of Health confirmed Wednesday that the coyote was rabid.

A woman walking her dog Sunday evening around 8:30 p.m. in Warwick was bit by a coyote.

The incident took place behind the victim’s apartment complex, Cowesset Hills, located on Greenwich Bay Street.

Warwick Police say the woman went to the hospital around midnight on Monday.

Authorities put down a coyote earlier, saying that it was acting strangely.

The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) took custody of the deceased animal and is investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, authorities are advising to be on the look out for coyotes and to exercise caution.

The condition of the woman who was bit is unknown.
