Woman charged in deadly Providence hit-and-run given bail

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence woman charged in a hit-and-run that killed an elderly woman appeared in Providence District Court on Tuesday.

Caitlin Kelly posted $10,000 bail with surety over the weekend. On Tuesday, a judge granted her the same bail.

Kelly faces a felony charge of duty to stop in accidents resulting in death in connection to a crash that killed an 85-year-old woman last week.

A loved one of the victim spoke with ABC 6 News outside of court, expressing their frustration with the investigation as they struggle to pick up the pieces after the family’s loss.

“My wife just continues to struggle. A struggle that I’ve never witnessed before,” said Michael Deshaies, son-in-law of the victim. “Just to witness the sadness and to kind of understand what that might feel like is sad. It’s really sad.”

Police were called to North Main and Pleasant Streets around 6 a.m. last Wednesday for a report of a fatal hit-and-run crash.

Officers found the 85-year-old woman and her husband, who had been hit by a car that then fled the scene.

Several hours later, the woman died from her injuries. Her husband is expected to be OK.

Prosecutors revealed after the crash, they used surveillance video in the area to identify the car, and from there used flock cameras around the city and other investigative measures to identify the car and find Kelly.
