Woman dies after falling into lit fire pit

South Kingstown Police have identified the woman found deceased after falling into a lit fire pit as 63-year-old Carol E. Reed.

Upon arrival, crews located Reed in the back yard after she had been pulled from the fire. She was declared deceased on scene.
It is unclear how Reed got into the fire, but preliminary reports indicate she may have suffered from a medical event before falling. Police say she was burning leaves and brush at the time of the incident, and was only in the fire for a short period of time before a family member found her.
The cause of death is still pending, though officials say there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding Reed’s death. The incident is under investigation by South Kingstown Police, the RI Fire Marshal and the Office of the Medical Examiner.
