OAK BLUFFS, Mass. (WLNE) — The Oak Bluffs Police Department said a 60-year-old woman remains in critical condition after a car crashed into a a telephone pole and Sunset Lake on Dec. 12.

The crash occurred around 11;45 p.m. when responding officers found the overturned car in the water near the damaged pole.

A 31-year-old woman, determined to be the operator of the vehicle, was on the shoreline while a 35-year-old man was in the water with his feet trapped under the car.

He told officers that his mother was in the back compartment of the car, which was filling with water.

The man and the older woman were brought to shore, where officers said the woman was unconscious with no pulse and was not breathing.

All three were transported to Martha’s Vineyard hospital, where the younger woman and man were treated for minor injuries and remain hospitalized.

The older woman was airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Police said a preliminary investigation found speed and alcohol to have contributed to the crash, and that criminal charges are likely to be filed against the operator.
