Rhode Island trooper involved shooting in Woonsocket

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — A Rhode Island State Police trooper was involved in a shooting in Woonsocket Wednesday night.

The shooting happened at about 7 p.m. on North Main Street.

Neighbors told ABC 6 News that a car crashed into a brick wall in front of a home along North Main Street between West School and Barton streets. They said the person was shot and was quickly taken to the hospital. Those two areas have been taped off while police investigate the shooting.

Police didn’t immediately release the person’s identity.

Also Wednesday night, state police scheduled a press conference for Thursday morning to discuss the incident, but later canceled it. The agency didn’t say why it called off the presser.

This trooper involved shooting comes less than 24 hours before the current head of state police, James Manni, steps down to take on a new role as town manager in South Kingstown.
