Woonsocket proposal to ban homeless encampments moves forward

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — A proposal from the Woonsocket City Council to ban homeless encampments in the city is moving forward after it received second passage at Monday night’s Woonsocket City Council meeting.

The ordinance would prohibit camping or leaving belongings on public property.

Once it goes into effect, anyone found in violation would be summoned to a non-criminal court hearing, and repeat offenders would be charged a $250 fine.

Additionally, the council approved the opening of a fifty-bed temporary homeless shelter on Cumberland Street.

A city spokesperson said that the proposal will now go before Mayor Christopher Beauchamp for his signature, and will take effect on May 16, 11 days after the City Council meeting.
