Yes, the leaves are changing earlier this year. Here’s why that’s not a good thing.

The fall colors may be nice to look at, but this year, it’s also a sign the trees are in distress.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – It’s no secret.  New England is very well known for its spectacular fall foliage.

ISA certified arborist and founder of Largess Forestry, Matthew “The Twig” Largess says, “People come from all over the world to New England to see these trees, and they’re part of our heritage.”

This year, that foliage is off to an early start here in southern New England.

Largess says, “Oh, this is very early.  They usually change October into November, and even the Japanese maples in Newport County in December.”

The fall colors are the product of a natural reaction to changes in temperature, sunlight, and water.  This year, the drought is playing a key role in pushing those colors ahead of schedule.

Largess says not every species is reacting to the drought in the same way at the time same.  So, while some trees are still green, others are already showing off those vivid fall colors.  But, while the reds and oranges may be nice to look at, they’re also a bad sign for tree health.

Largess says, “They’re trying to survive.  Without water, the key to life, H20, they’re in deep trouble right now.”

He says he’s concerned, and he’s already getting a lot of phone calls to address sick and dying trees.

Largess says, “Seeing dieback on these ancient trees, 100, 200 year old trees with now dead limbs that they didn’t have before.  Very concerning.  Historic drought.”

He says if you have trees on your property, watering them now could help them survive.  And, be sure to replace any trees that die.  But, he also says despite that serious message, there’s still plenty to enjoy about the fall.

Largess says, “Fall is just fantastic.  Get out there, and let’s pray for the rain.”
