#17 Harvard Hands #20 Providence Men’s Lacrosse First Loss
The Providence College men’s lacrosse team was defeated by No. 19/17 Harvard, 12-10, on Saturday, Feb. 15 in Providence, R.I. The Friars dropped to 2-1 on the season. Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) paced the Friars’ offense with six points on four goals and two assists. This marks his second game of the season with four goals or more.
1st Quarter:
• Providence opened the game with back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 lead.
• Joseph scored the first goal at 14:45, followed by Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) goal at 14:16.
•Harvard responded with a goal at 3:33 to narrow the Friars lead to 2-1.
• The Friars took a 3-1 at 11:27 with a goal from Jack Horrigan (Lutherville, Md.).
• The Crimson recorded two-consecutive goals to tie the game 3-3.
• Providence outshot Harvard 14-5 in the first quarter.
2nd Quarter:
• Harvard opened the quarter with a goal to take a 4-3 lead over the Friars (13:53).
• Joseph scored for the Friars to tie the game at four with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Sam Brazell then scored for the Friars on an assist from Ryan Bell to regain the lead at 5-4 (9:29).
• The Crimson responded with back-to-back goals to take a 6-5 lead (1:50).
• Brazell scored for the Friars on an assist from Joseph to tie the game at 6-6 with 45 seconds remaining in the first half.
• Providence outshot Harvard 25-16 in the first half.
3rd Quarter:
• The Crimson began the second half with a goal to take a 7-6 lead (9:28).
• Joseph scored his second goal of the day to tie the game 7-7 at 8:11.
• Harvard scored back-to-back goals to take a 9-7 lead (5:54).
• Dan Donahue (Weston, Mass.) made five saves for the Friars in the third quarter.
• Harvard outshot the Friars 11-9 in the third quarter.
4th Quarter
• Joseph opened the fourth quarter with his third goal of the day to bring the Friars back within one goal at 9-8 (13:22).
• Harvard scored back-to-back goals to take a three-goal lead at 11-8 (3:20).
• Horrigan responded with a quick goal for the Friars to cut the Harvard lead to 11-9 (2:41).
• Harvard scored a goal out of a timeout to extend their lead to 12-9 (1:14).
• Joseph scored his fourth goal of the day with five seconds remaining to cut the Harvard led to 12-10. Harvard held a two-goal lead to win the game as time expired.
Notes:
• Joseph recorded a game-high six points on four goals and two assists.
• Horrigan notched two goals for the Friars.
• Donahue recorded 12 saves and a .500 save percentage.
• McConnaughey went 19-26 at the face-off ‘X’.
• Bell notched two points on two assists. He is second on the Friars’ all-time scoring list with 187 career points on 52 goals and 186 assists. Ken Leahy ’00 is the Friars’ all-time leading point scorer with 188 points on 112 goals and 76 assists. Bell needs just two points to take sole possession of the mark.
• Bell also is the program’s all-time assist leader and he continues to build a cushion in the top spot (186 assists).
What’s Next: The Friars will travel to Brown on Saturday, Feb. 22. This marks the final game for Providence in the Ocean State Cup. Faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
