#19 Friars Lose To #12 Northeastern In Shootout After Wild Third Period

Greg Printz tied the game up with 1:14 remaining in regulation as the No. 19 Providence College men’s hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with No. 12 Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena. The Huskies claimed the extra point in the Hockey East standings by virtue of a 1-0 win in the best-of-three shootout.

NOTES
– The Huskies grabbed an early lead at the 3:14 mark as Jayden Struble finished off a deflected shot at the side of the Friars’ cage.
– Weathering an early storm, Providence re-grouped and knotted things at 1-1 at 11:44 of the period on Matt Koopman’s first of the season. Greg Printz and Parker Ford earned the assists on the play after Ford’ strong drive down the slot created a scramble in front of Murphy.
– The Friars killed off two power play chances for the Huskies in the second period, fueled by timely blocks and key stops from Stauber.
– Freshman Uula Ruikka put Providence up 2-1 on the power play at 15:51 on a one-timer off a pass from Michael Callahan. Tyce Thompson also earned the assist on the play.
– Northeastern responded and tied things up at 18:59 on a Ty Jackson goal.
– The teams opened the third period with 11:08 off uninterrupted action with both teams generating high quality chances.
– It was the Huskies who broke the deadlock with 2:54 to play on Zach Solow’s goal after shattering his stick.
– Opting for the extra attacker, the Friars equalized again with 1:14 left on Greg Printz’s second goal of the season after a centering feed from Nick Poisson banked in off his body.
– Printz nearly won it in overtime but his breakaway was denied by Murphy.
– Stauber came up strong in the 3-on-3 session, robbing Jordan Harris twice.
– Aidan McDonough scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Huskies the extra point in the Hockey East standings.
– Ruikka’s goal was the first of his collegiate career.
– Thompson now has five points over his past two games (1-4-5).
– Ford has four assists over his past two contests.
