#9 Providence Wins First Game Against Anchorage in Over 30 Years

– Bennett Schimek and Nick Poisson scored second period goals while Philip Svedebäck earned his third shutout of the season as the No. 9 Providence College men’s hockey team blanked Alaska-Anchorage, 2-0, on Friday night (Jan. 19) at Schneider Arena.

NOTES

– The Friars outshot the Seawolves by a 14-4 margin in the first period but the teams remained scoreless after 20 minutes.

– Providence struck for a pair of goals 2:12 apart in the second period to take a 2-0 lead.

– Bennett Schimek snuck a shot through the five-hole of Jared Whale off a rush for his fourth goal of the season and second in as many games. Taige Harding and Austen May earned the assists on the play.

– After UAA’s Brett Bamber was assessed a five-minute major for boarding, Nick Poisson fired a shot off the post and in for his sixth of the season to increase the lead to 2-0. Hudson Malinoski and Guillaume Richard assisted on the play.

– The Seawolves had a push in the third period, holding a 7-4 shot advantage over the Friars but Svedebäck was up to the task to keep the visitors off the board in the third period.

– Svedebäck posted his third shutout of the season and fourth of his career in the win.

– The game marked Alaska-Anchorage’s first visit to Schneider Arena since 1990.
