Brown Rolls Past Johnson & Wales Tuesday

Brown University Press Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men’s basketball team defeated Johnson & Wales 98-47 Tuesday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The victory moves the Bears to 3-1 on the season.

“I thought after the initial four minutes, we played pretty well,” head coach Mike Martin said. “Obviously, we have some things to improve upon, like too many turnovers and fouls in the second half, but we had a size advantage and our forwards took advantage of that. Our guards looked for them, and we had a lot of people chasing down offensive rebounds. I’m pleased with the win, and pleased with some of the things I saw, and still much to work on.”

On the night, Jaylan Gainey led the team with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Nana Owusu-Anane added 13 points and seven rebounds, and Kino Lilly Jr. added 10 points, two rebounds and two assists. Dan Friday added a game-high six assists and Malachi Ndur led all players with eight rebounds.

The Bears shot 45.2 percent (33-for-73 from the field and went 24-of-26 from the free throw line, while limiting Johnson & Wales to just 29.1 percent from the floor. Brown also dominated 50-20 in the paint, 25-7 in transition, and outrebounded the Wildcats 54-27.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, but the Bears would go on to score the next 22 points to take a commanding 26-8 lead with nine minutes to play in the first half. Overall, Brown closed the opening half on a 49-11 run.

Brown did a good job of imposing its will in the first frame, outrebounding JWU 27-10 before halftime.

Kino Lilly Jr. and Kimo Ferrari shot well off the bench in the first half, going a combined 5-for-7 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc to help the Bears to a 53-19 halftime lead.

The Bears picked up right where they left off to start the second half with good team offense and keeping the pressure up on defense. A Perry Cowan dunk off an assist from Lilly Jr. made it 78-29 just after the halfway point of the second.

From there, it was basically even to end things with the team’s trading baskets for the rest of the way.

The Bears now turn their attention to the Paradise Jam tournament in the U.S. Virgin Islands. They will take on Creighton this Friday, Nov. 19 at 5:15 p.m. to kick off the tournament.

“We have a Sweet 16 team from last year (vs. Creighton on Friday), albeit with a lot of new faces, but a program that has been to the Sweet 16 and Big East champions recently, so it’ll be a challenge, but I have confidence every day in what I see in our team and I know they’ll be ready for it,” Martin said. “These guys are competitors and they are relishing the opportunity to play Creighton.”
