Rhody Women Win Eighth Straight, Remain Undefeated at Home

Rhode Island won its eighth game in a row, cruising to a 68-54 victory over Davidson Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center. The 8-0 streak matches the program’s longest winning streak, which was set during the 1978-79 season. The victory also gives Rhody a 5-0 start to Atlantic 10 play for the first time in program history.

The Rams established control early on, pulling ahead by 10 (13-3) on a fast break basket by Emmanuelle Tahane just six minutes into the game. The Wildcats closed out the period on a 9-2 run to pull within three (15-12), but that was as close as they got.

Another fast break bucket – this time a 3-ball by Marta Vargas – pushed Rhody’s lead to 11 (25-14) midway through the second quarter and the Rams remained on top by double-digits the rest of the way. URI widened the gap to as many as 22 in the third quarter and never let the advantage dip below 11.

The second quarter – where URI outscored Davidson 22-7 – proved to be the difference in the game as the Rams only outscored the Wildcats by three points (15-12) in the first quarter and one (16-15) in the third. Davidson had a 20-15 scoring advantage in the fourth period, but the lopsided second was too much to for the Wildcats to overcome.
