Attorney general’s office says Rhode Island plans to retry Leron Porter in Providence murder case

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) — Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha is planning on retrying Leron Porter after his murder conviction was thrown out by a federal court Tuesday.
“We are reviewing the decision and evaluation our next steps. It is our intention to retry Mr. Porter consistent with the court’s decision,” a spokesperson for Neronha said to ABC 6 News.
Porter was convicted of the 2011 murder in Providence of 17-year-old Tiphany Tallo.
However, Porter’s conviction was overturned Tuesday after a federal appeals court said the prosecutor in the trial struck a juror solely over their race.
Under the court order, the state has 90 days to retry Porter or he will be released.
Porter was sentenced to life with possibility of parole for the murder.
