Block Island to appoint interim police chief on Monday

Block Island (WLNE)

NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WLNE) — The New Shoreham Town Council will appoint an interim police chief in Monday night’s meeting.

Former chief, Matthew Moynihan, left post last week to take over as South Kingstown’s chief.

“South Kingstown is a wonderful community, and I am humbled to be selected to lead the South Kingstown Police Department. My wife and I moved here 23 years ago and raised our family here. We love the town and having the opportunity to join this department as chief is truly a dream job,” said Moynihan in a statement.

Moynihan left post less than a week after the Town Council voted against funding state troopers on the island this summer.

However, Gov. Dan McKee said that the state would pay for two troopers to detail the island just two days after Moynihan left post.

The Town Council will meet at 7 p.m.
