Warren Town Manager speaks on Marijuana public smoking ordinance

WARREN, R.I. (WLNE)- While Rhode Island became the 19th state to legalize marijuana in late May, Warren may become the first town in Rhode Island to ban smoking marijuana in public.

The state’s marijuana law gives town and cities to regulate the use of cannabis in their own communities.

Warren’s town council is still working on which public areas marijuana would be banned and how the ordinance would be enforced.

On Friday, ABC6 asked the town manager her stance on the issue.

“I think it’s a fine line,” Town Manager Kate Michaud said.

“Personally I’m not sure where I stand because this is all new. I wouldn’t want to advocate for anything that would harm businesses or make the children in the community uncomfortable. This is all new and I will execute whatever the town council decides.”

The town council also discussed implementing a similar order to the town’s tobacco ordinance which bans the use of that substance at any municipal athletic recreation area.

Violations for that ordinance include a $100 fine.

ABC6 spoke with residents about how they would feel is marijuana was allowed to be smoked in public areas.

“I think there’s a general level of respect when you’re around families and when you’re in public places. Even downtown here in Warren I think it’s a little out of place to see people smoking right in front of you,” Warren resident Sally Todd said.

Warren resident Bill Nokomis said he’s ok with smoking in public areas, as long as it’s done in a designated area.

“That way people aren’t offended by the smell or sight of it being consumed. Give them an area where they can be off…like cigarettes… by themselves and enjoy it,” Nokomis said.

ABC6 left messages for all members of the town council on Friday.

One member responded but declined to comment.

New details on the ordinance are expected to be announced at the next council meeting on August 9th.
