Baker: Orange Line to shut down 30 days for track and car replacement.

BOSTON (WLNE) — Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker announced Wednesday that the MBTA’s Orange Line will be shutting down for 30 days.

The MBTA will use the 30 days to replace the tracks along the Orange Line’s route. The train line will close at 9 p.m. on Aug. 19 and reopen at 5 a.m. Sept. 19.

Baker said that the maintenance would normally take five years without shutting down the line.

The improvements should prevent delays and make Orange Line trips, the governor added.

At the end of the 30 days, the Orange Line will reopen not only with new tracks, but new cars.

The governor was joined by Transportation Secretary Jamey Tesler and MBTA general manager Steve Poftak for the annoucement.

The transit service has undergone several safety issues in the past few months.

In May, federal transportation officials reviewed MBTA safety after a Red Line passenger died after getting his arm caught in a subway door.

An MBTA train also caught fire on a bridge last month. Passengers kicked out the windows to escape, and one person even jumped into the water.
