Grandmother who helped boys escape burning home in Pawtucket dies

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — A grandmother who helped her grandchildren escape a burning home in Pawtucket two days ago died.
Pawtucket police said Friday that 71-year-old Maria Cardenas “did not survive her injuries and passed away.”
The fire happened early Wednesday morning on Ballston Avenue.
Witnesses told ABC 6 News that the boys’ grandmother was trapped inside for about 40 minutes before firefighters cut a hole in the roof to rescue her.
Police said that one of the boys, who’s 12 years old, and Cardenas were taken to the hospital for treatment.
