PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The trial for one of the men accused of having a part in the shooting death of a 24-year-old woman in Providence begins Tuesday.

Isaiah Pinkerton, 26, was arrested last summer in connection to the killing of Miya Brophy-Baermann.

Providence police said Brophy-Baermann was with a friend on Olney Street in the early hours of Aug. 1, 2021 when she was shot and killed.

Police said it was a drive-by shooting, and she was not the intended target.

The Brophy-Baermann family put out a reward for information leading to an arrest. An anonymous donor later donated $100,000 to help the family get justice.

While they waited for answers, Miya’s family set up the Miya D. Brophy-Baermann Scholarship Fund in her memory.

The scholarship benefits students planning for a career in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology.

Miya recently got her master’s degree from Northeastern University. She started her first job in North Providence just weeks before she was killed.

No arrests were made for over a year before police announced the arrests of Pinkerton and Shawn Mann.

Both men pled not guilty to charges including murder and were held without bail.

Mann has a court date in July, according to online court records.
