Girl hurt in fatal shooting at Springfield apartment dies

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WLNE) — A 10-year-old girl who was hurt in a shooting in Springfield, Massachusetts, last week has died, WCVB reports.

The girl was one of two children being treated for gunshot wounds after an upstairs neighbor broke into an apartment on Berkshire Avenue and opened fire.

The grandmother, 57-year-old Kim Fairbanks, and a dog were fatally shot.

Fairbanks was reportedly babysitting at the time.

Springfield police said the suspect, 34-year-old Victor Nieves, also shot two of the three children in the home before turning the gun on himself.

The 10-year-old girl died last Thursday. Her sister, 12, was reportedly stable.

Their 5-year-old brother was not physically harmed.

Fairbanks reportedly died trying to save her grandchildren.

The investigation remains ongoing.
