Choh, Gainey Earn Ivy League Honors

Brown junior forward Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) and sophomore forward Jaylan Gainey (Greensboro, NC) have been named to the 2019-20 All-Ivy Men’s Basketball Team, with Choh earning Second Team All-Ivy honors and Gainey being named the Ivy League Defensive Co-Player of the Year by a vote of the eight Ancient Eight head basketball coaches.

Choh was named Second Team All-Ivy for the second straight season after averaging 13.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game for the Bears. He posted eight double-doubles throughout the season, posting 20 points and 12 rebounds against both Penn and Bryant.

Recognized as one of the outstanding rebounders in the Ivy League, his 8.1 rebounds per game were third in the conference.  He pulled down a season high 14 rebounds vs. Quinnipiac. An outstanding passer, Choh led the Bears and ranked fifth in the Ivy league in assists (47).

Gainey is the second consecutive Brown player, and third overall, to be named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, joining Obi Okolie (2019) and Cedric Kuakumensah (2013, 2014). He led the Ivy League and ranked 29thnationally with 2.1 blocked shots per game, finishing with 54 blocks, sixth best in Brown basketball history.

An imposing figure in the paint with impeccable timing, the 6-9 Gainey tied the Brown school record with seven blocked shots vs. Merrimack. He had five blocked shots in Ivy action against Yale, and four blocks against Harvard and Princeton. Gainey shot a phenomenal 69-percent from the field (36-of-52) and averaged 5.1 rebounds per game, including a career high 12 rebounds against Penn and Columbia.

The duo helped the Brown team to a 15-12 overall record, a fourth place finish in the Ivy standings at 8-6, and a school record 35 wins over the last two years.
