Results for all of Southern New England’s special elections
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts Tuesday, voters took to the polls on a number of special elections.
Rhode Island 1st Congressional District Special Election:
In Rhode Island, voters elected Democrat Gabe Amo to represent the state’s 1st Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.
Amo pulled in roughly 63.1% of the votes, while Republican candidate Gerry Leonard pulled in roughly 36.9%.
Rhode Island District 1 Special General Election:
The Associated Press reports that voters decided Democrat Jacob Bissaillon will complete former Senator Maryellen Goodwin’s term after she died of cancer in April.
North Kingstown Referendum:
Also on the ballot was a special election for State Senate and special referendums in Smithfield, East Greenwich and North Kingstown.
Unofficial results show 61.8% of voters in North Kingstown rejected the $222,460,000 bond for a new school and public safety complex, and 64.5% also voted to reject the $25,000,000 bond for the construction of a new recreation center and emergency shelter.
Smithfield Referendum:
Unofficial results show 61.6% of voters in Smithfield voted to reject the $18,000,000 bond for the development and renovation of the town’s police station.
East Greenwich Referendum:
Unofficial results show 69.2% of voters in East Greenwich chose to approve the $150,000,000 bond to go towards school construction and improvements.
Warren Referendum:
Unofficial results show 65.5% of voters in Warren chose to approve the $200,000,000 bond to go towards school construction and improvements in their town
Cumberland Referendum:
Unofficial results show 68.4% of voters in Cumberland voted to approve the $52,000,000 bond for school construction and improvements in their town.
Attleboro, Mass. Mayoral Election:
Attleboro’s current Mayor, Cathleen DeSimone ran for mayor unopposed.
Fall River, Mass. Mayoral Election:
In Fall River, current Mayor Paul Coogan was named the projected winner in the race for mayor with 6,643 votes, while former Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter collected 4,310.
In September, Mayor Coogan pulled in the most votes for the city’s preliminary mayoral election, with an unofficial final count of 4,284. Sutter came in second to Coogan in the primary, collecting 2,516 votes.
Taunton, Mass. Mayoral Election:
In Taunton, current Mayor Shaunna O’Connell (R) declared victory against Democrat Ed Correira in the race for mayor after receiving 5,223 votes, roughly 58.6% of those counted. Correira received 3,658, roughly 41% of voters, according to the city.
Back in 2020, the city of Taunton made history by electing Mayor O’Connell as the city’s first female mayor.
New Bedford, Mass. Mayoral Election:
In New Bedford, city officials said Mayor Jon Mitchell was reelected for his fifth term. Mitchell raked in 5,272 votes, while his challenger, Tyson Moultrie, pulled in 2,719 votes.
Back in October, Mayor Jon Mitchell won the city’s preliminary municipal election with a total of 2,544 votes. Mayor Mitchell was followed by Moultrie who received 357 votes.
