Westerly Police respond to incident at Babcock Village

WESTERLY, R.I. (WLNE)– Westerly police responded to what was described as a “mental health issue” at Babcock Village, according to a statement on their Facebook page Monday afternoon.
Police said they had received a report of a resident with a firearm at around 4:30 p.m. A negotiator was brought in after police secured the building and some residents were evacuated.
No one was injured during the incident, and a safe surrender was arranged. Police said charges would be forthcoming.
Babcock Village was the site of a shooting in December that claimed the life of a staff member. Two others were injured before the gunman, a resident of the facility, turned the gun on himself.
