How it Happened
A poorly-executed second half caused Rhode Island to suffer a 71-68 setback against Fordham on Wednesday night at The Ryan Center.
Though Rhody (9-10, 3-3 Atlantic 10) led 34-31 at the break, the visiting Rams opened up the following period on a 9-3 run that allowed them to pull ahead. URI made pushes, as there were 10 total lead changes in the game, but was never able to regain control.
What felt like the home team’s best chance at winning came in the closing seconds when Cam Estevez made a layup that brought the squad’s deficit down to 70-68. Rhode Island committed a quick foul in an attempt to get the ball back and though David Green nabbed a key defensive board when Fordham’s (9-10, 3-3 Atlantic 10) Elijah Gray missed his second consecutive chance, a turnover allowed the visitors to seal their victory.
Inside the Box Score
- Forward David Fuchs recorded his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds.
- Of his 17 rebounds, 13 came on the defensive end. It was a major reason Fordham was limited to five offensive boards. Fordham entered the game averaging a league-best 13.8 offensive rebounds per game.
- Center Jeremy Foumena had 13 points and five rebounds off the bench.
- He was 5-of-7 from the field, including a 3-point basket.
- Guard Luis Kortright just missed a double-double. He had 10 points and a season-high nine rebounds.
- Guard Brandon Weston provided nine points on 3-of-4 shooting off the bench.
- Both sides struggled at the free throw line. Fordham was 9-for-25, while Rhode Island was 18-of-30. After going 11-of-15 in the first half, URI was 7-for-15 in the second half.
