Second Half Run Propels PC Past Seton Hall Wednesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s basketball team defeated the Seton Hall Pirates (13-7, 6-3 BIG EAST), 67-63, on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The Friars improved to 13-6 overall and 4-4 in BIG EAST play. Graduate student Ticket Gaines (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the Friars offensively with 17 points shooting 6-8 from the field and 5-7 from three. Graduate Josh Oduro (Gainesville, Va.) aided the team with eight rebounds, two assists and 16 points on the night. Junior Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) added 14 points, six rebounds, and a game-high six assists. Sophomore Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) was final Friar in double figures with all 11 of his points in the second half.

FIRST HALF:
•The two teams battled to open the scoring for the first 1:16 minutes of the game. At the 18:47 mark, Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) snagged a defensive rebound and converted a three. Seton Hall quickly countered with a 5-0 surge. At the first media timeout (15:30 mark), the Friars trailed, 5-3.
•Coming out of the timeout, the Friars started off strong with a 5-0 run to regain the lead. With 13:38 on the clock, Gaines sank an emphatic dunk to give the Friars a three-point lead, 10-7.
•The two teams continued to go back-and-forth into the under-12 media timeout. At the 11:51 mark, the Friars held a slim one-point lead, 12-11.
•With approximately seven minutes left to play, Seton Hall went on a 7-0 scoring drive. At the 5:54 mark, Garwey Dual (Houston, Texas) ended the Friars’ scoring drought with a pull-up jumper in the paint. Friars trailed, 20-19.
•The Friars found momentum outscoring the Pirates 10-4 over the span of 2:09. At the 2:09 mark, Carter scored a fast break layup to give the Friars a seven-point lead, the largest of the game, 30-23.
• Seton Hall followed with eight unanswered points over a 1:30 minute span to find the lead. Heading into the locker room, Providence trailed by one, 31-30.
•Coach English was given a technical foul at with 1:30 on the clock.
• Providence failed to score in the final 2:52 minutes of the half.
• Ticket Gaines spearheaded the Friar offense shooting 5-6 from the field and 4-5 from three. He was the lone player to enter double-digit points, boasting 14 points at half.
• There were five ties and nine lead changes in the first half.
•Providence shot 12-25 (48.0%) from the field, 5-10 (50.0%) from three and 1-1 (100.0%) from the free throw line.
•Seton Hall shot 10-36 (27.8%) from the field, 3-8 (37.5%) from three and 8-9 (88.9%) from the free throw line.

SECOND HALF:
• Oduro opened the second half scoring with a layup at the 18:32 mark. Seton Hall answered with nine points.
• The Friars stayed competitive with Seton Hall, marking all three points from the field. With 16:48 on the clock, Carter reached double digit scoring with 11 points, securing it with a layup and narrowing the score 40-37.
•The Pirates extended their lead, reaching the largest margin of the night by the under-12 media timeout at the 11:49 mark with a score of 51-41.
• Led by New Jersey native Jayden Pierre, the Friars narrowed the deficit with a 9-2 scoring drive. At the 9:01 mark, the Friars trailed, 53-50.
•With 6:52 left in the game, Pierre slammed in a dunk to give the Friars their first lead of the half. Carter followed suit with a right-handed layup, contributing to a 17-4 run to force a SHU timeout. Friars led, 58-55.
•Both teams went scoreless for over three minutes. With less than a minute remaining (00:41 mark), Pierre drew a foul and converted two points, making it a two-possession game at 64-61.
•Seton Hall continued to battle, keeping the score within a two-point margin with 00:21 on the clock. Friars led, 65-63.
•Pierre secured the win with a steal to seal the game. The Friars finished on top with a final score of 67-63.
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
•Providence finished 22-49 (44.9%) from the field, 7-22 (31.8%) from three and a season-high 16-17 (94.1%) from the free throw line.
•Seton Hall finished 21-65 (32.3%) from the field, 5-16 (31.3%) from three and 16-17 (94.1%) from the free throw line.
•The Friars outscored the Pirates 30-26 with points in the paint, 12-8 in fast-break points, and 8-5 in points off the bench.
•There were 12 lead changes in the game.
• Four Providence players finished with double digits: Gaines (17), Oduro (16), Carter (14) and Pierre (11).
•Providence now leads the all-time series against Seton Hall, 57-56.
