PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – An iconic figure in Rhode Island sports journalism was honored today.

The General Assembly passed legislation on Wednesday naming the media room in the Amica Mutual Pavilion (AMP) after the late Bill Reynolds.

Reynolds, a long-time sports columnist for the Providence Journal, passed away in July 2023.

Senator Frank Lombardi and Representative Evan Shanley introduced the bill naming the room after Reynolds.

“Bill’s column was a must-read for all Rhode Islanders,” Lombardi said. “His contribution to sports reporting and his advocacy for high school sports has left an indelible mark on this state, and I’m glad and proud to introduce this legislation to memorialize a man who should be remembered for generations.”

Shortly after his passing, Brown University held an event for Reynolds and the launch of his book.

Now his name is set to be immortalized in ‘The Amp’ for years to come.

“Rhode Island journalism lost a great treasure with the passing of Bill Reynolds,” Shanley said. “With this gesture, his name will live on for a long time, as it does in the hearts of all those who knew him and read his column.”

The measure now moves to the governor’s office for its final jurisdiction.
