White supremacist group reportedly gathered in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — The Cumberland Police Department said that a white supremacist group appeared to have gathered in different locations around the town on Saturday.

The gatherings places included the town’s library and Chief Matthew Benson said “I believe [they] were from PINE,” or the The People’s Initiative of New England.

The Anti-Defamation League lists PINE as a white supremacist group and an offshoot of the National Socialist Club 131, which has been active in the state in the past.

“PINE advocates for its five-point plan for New England, a more sanitized version of NSC-131’s agenda that includes seceding from the U.S. to create a ‘white homeland’ and ending all non-white immigration,” the ADL’s website says.

Benson added that police were called to the meeting sites out of “caution,” and that the gatherings were orderly and no arrests where made.
