UConn Pulls Away From PC Women’s Basketball Team In BIG EAST Quarterfinal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s basketball team was eliminated from BIG EAST Tournament action by top-seeded and ninth-ranked Connecticut, 86-53, in the Quarterfinal Round on March 9 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Providence dropped to 13-20 on the year, while the Huskies improved to 27-5 and advance to the Semifinals.

 

1ST QUARTER:

• Providence used a 7-0 run to take a 7-3 lead at the 6:54 mark.

• UConn answered with a 9-0 run of its own to take a 12-7 lead before Brynn Farrell knocked down a triple from the left wing at the 3:57 mark (12-10).

• The Huskies finished the quarter with a 14-3 scoring advantage to take a 26-13 lead at the break.

 

2ND QUARTER:

• The Friars cut the deficit to eight (29-21) with a 6-0 spurt at the 6:25 mark.

• UConn took a 34-23 lead into the media timeout (4:52).

• Providence’s defense held UConn without a field goal in the final 4:51 of the half, limiting the Huskies scoring to four free throws.

• Grace Efosa scored the Friars’ final seven points of the third and Providence trailed 38-28 at halftime.

 

3RD QUARTER:

• Marta Morales Romero scored five-straight points to start the third and got the Friars within five (38-33).

• UConn got its lead back to nine with a 6-2 spurt before Nariah Scott drained a three from the top of the key to make it a 44-38 game with 5:33 left on the clock.

• Connecticut closed the quarter with an 18-7 run to claim a 17-point advantage heading into the final quarter (62-45).

 

4TH QUARTER:

• Providence scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter, but UConn answered with a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 20 (67-47).

• The Huskies put the game out of reach with a 12-0 run late in the frame and went on to win 86-53.

 

NOTES:

• Efosa scored a team-best 23 points on 8-14 shooting, while hauling in a team-high eight rebounds. It marked her third 20+ point game of the season and fourth of her career.

• Brynn Farrell added 11 points and Morales Romero finished with 10.
