RI Rep. Batista pushes bill for abandoned properties to be considered for redevelopment

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Representative Jose Batista has introduced legislation to help aid in housing production in the state by requiring towns to publish lists of abandoned properties.
This bill is a part of the package addressing the housing crisis in Rhode Island.
The legislation calls for the existing statue for abandoned buildings to further require municipal inventory, yearly updating, and clarifies the process of abatement.
“There are so many places in our communities that were once useful, and really could be useful again if someone made the effort to redevelop them. Development that transforms blighted properties into the homes we desperately need would help address our housing crisis while simultaneously making our existing neighborhoods safer and more vibrant,” said Rep. Batista.
“Neighborhoods, people who need homes and municipalities all benefit when abandoned properties are redeveloped.”
Legislation is scheduled for a hearing Tuesday before the Housing Committee.
