PC To Play Boston College In NIT Tuesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s basketball team has been selected to play in the National Invitation Tournament. The field was announced on March 17. The Friars enter the tournament as a No. 3 seed and will host Boston College on Tuesday, March 19 at Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPNU. The Friars will make their 21st appearance all-time in the NIT and 43rd appearance in post-season play overall [NCAA, NIT].

Providence College season ticket holders will have the opportunity to purchase their seats through a presale beginning at 9:00 a.m. on March 18. Ticket sales will open to the general public at Noon. The Friars enter the NIT with a 21-13 overall record. Providence recently competed in BIG EAST Tournament action as the No. 7 seed and defeated No. 10-seed Georgetown in the First Round (74-56) and followed with a 78-73 victory over No. 2 seed and nationally-ranked Creighton in the Quarterfinals. The Friars advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals for the 13th time in program history where the squad suffered a 79-68 loss to No. 3 seed and nationally-ranked Marquette.

It marks the third-straight postseason appearance for the Friars and 11th appearance in the last 13 years [all postseason tournaments were cancelled in 2019-20 due to the Covid-19 pandemic]. Providence’s 2024 post-season appearance will be the first under the direction of Head Coach Kim English.

The Friars, who won the NIT in 1961 and 1963, have registered a 32-21 mark all-time in NIT games.  Providence last competed in the NIT in 2019. The No. 4-seed Friars were defeated by No. 5-seed Arkansas, 84-72, on March 19, 2019 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion.

Providence and Boston College have met 113 times during the history of the two men’s basketball programs. The Friars lead the all-time series, 62-51, including a 39-16 mark at home in Providence, R.I. The teams last met on Dec. 4, 2018 at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Friars claimed a 100-95 victory in overtime.

Providence is 1-0 all-time versus Boston College in the NIT. The lone meeting took place on March 24, 1993 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Providence defeated the Eagles, 75-58.
