Caught on camera: Black bears caught fighting at Buttonwood Park Zoo

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — New Bedford police said they responded to a fight in progress at the Buttonwood Park Zoo yesterday.
Two black bears were seen in a video posted by police fighting in their enclosure.
“Upon further investigation, it was decided that it was none of our business, and the participants were best left to work things out themselves,” officials stated.
The zoop articipates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan for Black Bears, according to its website.
“Instead of focusing on breeding and genetic diversity, the Black Bear SSP manages the placement of rescued and rehabilitated bears that cannot return to the wild,” the zoo notes.
In September of 2023, Buttonwood welcomed two orphaned black bear cubs.
