Fall River man found guilty of 2021 murders
FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — A Fall River man was found guilty by a grand jury today of two murders that happened back in 2021.
On May 18, 2021, two people were killed at Griffin Park in Fall River in the middle of the day.
Jeremy Holmes, who investigators said was responsible for the shooting deaths of 29-year-old Jovaughn Antonio Mills and 14-year-old Miguel Sanjurjo, was charged and found guilty for two counts of murder.
There was also a third shooting victim who did recover.
Thursday was a full day of closing arguments and deliberations for the jury in Fall River superior court.
Holmes’ defense attorney said his actions on that day were out of protection of his friends and out of fear of rival gang violence.
While the commonwealth’s prosecutor said Holmes’ actions were pre-meditated acts of violence.
“Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families and friends of Jovaughn Mills and Miguel Sanjuro, although this conviction cannot replace their lives that were lost, we hope this resolution brings some closure to their family and friends,” said the Fall River Police Department in a statement.
