Rhody Beats UMass For Ninth Straight Win, Langevine Scores 1,000th Point, Scuffle Breaks Out Postgame

Rhode Island won its ninth game in a row, knocking off visiting UMass 73-67 Tuesday night. The Rhody captains led the charge as Fatts Russell, Cyril Langevine and Jeff Dowtin combined for 52 of the Rams’ 73 points.

Rhode Island led for the entirety of the game, jumping out to a 10-2 lead and never looking back. The Minutemen remained close – cutting Rhody’s advantage to two points on three separate occasions – but were unable to overcome the early deficit.

The Rams relied on their perimeter defense throughout the game, holding the Minutemen to just four makes on 19 attempts from long range (21 percent). While the defense made life difficult for UMass, the offense shot 47.3 percent from the field, using an efficient and balanced attack to improve to 11-1 at the Ryan Center.

Senior Cyril Langevine scored his 1,000th point in the win, becoming the 57th player in program to join the 1,000 point club. The milestone point came on a first-half free throw.
Langevine finished the night with 15 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and one steal.
Junior Fatts Russell recorded his team-leading 20th game in double figures, scoring 22 points with four rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Senior Jeff Dowtin also scored in double figures for the Rams, finishing the night with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Sophomore Tyrese Martin added eight points, four rebounds and a pair of assists for the Rams.
Sophomore Jermaine Harris had seven points, five rebounds and two assists.
Rhode Island never trailed, holding the lead for 39:23.
The Rams had a 16-3 edge in fast-break points.

The Rams return to action on Saturday afternoon at George Washington. The game, which will air nationally on CBS Sports Network, is set to tip off at Noon.
