Brown Loses Men’s Lacrosse Opener

The Fairfield Stags (2-0, 0-0 CAA) handed the Brown Bears (0-1, 0-0 Ivy League) a season-opening loss with an 11-5 final at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday.

“Not the result we wanted but I admire the way the guys competed,” said head coach Jon Torpey. “We have a great group, and I know as the season progresses, we will continue to grow.

“We have a lot to fix in a short period of time and our staff looks forward to finding some answers.”

Marcus Wertheim tallied Brown’s first goal of the season man-up 2:59 into the opening quarter off a fed from Spencer Hughes to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

The Stags responded with six straight goals, including two from Devin Lampron, to take a 6-1 lead with 4:39 remaining in the second quarter.

Ben Scandone ended the Fairfield run with his first goal of the season with four minutes remaining in the second quarter with an unassisted effort.

Fairfield goalie Owen Hirsch (13 saves) turned aside eight shots in the first half with Brown goalie Connor Foley (10 saves) making five stops.

Hughes got on the scoresheet with his first goal of 2025 with 9:08 remaining in the third to cut Fairfield’s lead to four at 7-3.

The Stags added goals from Luke Okupski, Jason LeMay, and Keegan Lynch to take a 10-3 lead into the final quarter.

Luke Dellicicchi cut into the Fairfield lead with nine minutes remaining in the fourth, finding his own rebound before beating Hirsch on the second effort.

GAME NOTES
Fairfield finished the game with a 42-34 edge in shots and a 21-18 edge in shots on goal.
The Bears won the ground ball battle narrowly with a 30-28 edge. Fairfield had 21 turnovers compared to 19 for Brown.
Fairfield won the faceoff battle with an 11-9 edge. Dylan Smith went 10-for-16 with six ground balls for the Stags.
Brown went 19-for-23 on clears.
The Bears head to Boston to take on the Boston University Terriers at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18. Tuesday’s game will stream on ESPN+ in the United States.
