UPDATE: Fall River residents vote to fund new high school

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — The plan to build a new Durfee High School was approved Tuesday night.
Voters approved a bond worth more than $165 million to build a new Durfee High School. 61% of voters said yes, while 39% said no.
Work on the new school is expected to start in the Fall, with plans to have the building open in 2021.

“I think education is important to the city of Fall River. To invest in our kids is a good investment for us. The high school is in poor shape. I think the return in the future will be realized if we spend the money now,” said David Pitts, who voted in favor of the bond.
The State of Massachusetts will kick in almost half of a $263 million price tag.
Durfee High School has been in bad condition. In fact, it had to close for a few of days in January after if flooded when pipes burst.
Work on the new school is expected to start in the fall, with plans to have the building open in 2021.
