Providence City Clerk resigns ahead of public hearing on ‘serious charges’
This resignation is effective immediately.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Providence City Clerk, Shawn Selleck, has submitted his resignation, effective immediately.
This comes just before the City Council was prepared to hold a public hearing this week to address serious charges brought against him, including violating conduct policies and creating a toxic work environment.
The report also concluded that staff members experienced harm due to Mr. Selleck’s behavior, according to a statement released by the City Council.
It was on October 7th when the City Council voted to begin the termination process for Mr. Selleck, for a Charter Section 403 “Charges Against Administrative Personnel.”
The Council’s action was based on findings from an independent report issued by Attorney Carly Iafrate.
Council President John J. Igliozzi stated in-part on Monday, “With the resignation of Mr. Selleck, effective immediately, the three female deputy clerks will not have to re-live their experiences in a public hearing. Rightly so, Mr. Selleck decided to resign before the hearing took place—a hearing which would have included public testimony from the three staff members and others who detailed their experiences in the Iafrate report.”
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
