Anderson’s Game Winner Lifts Brown over Bryant in Opener

Smithfield, R.I. – Brown senior Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) scored 23 points, including the game winning basket with 12 seconds remaining, to lead the Bears (1-0) to a 73-71 season opening win over Bryant (0-1) at the Chace Athletic Center.

 

The frenetic final minutes started when Brown junior Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) connected on two free throws with 2:45 remaining to give the Bears a 70-69 lead.

 

Bryant answered and grabbed a 71-70 advantage on a layup by Mikail Simmons with 1:09 left in the game.

Bryant’s Hall Elisias went to the free throw line for two shots with 1.1 seconds remaining with a change to tie the game. He missed the first and intentionally missed the second. Choh grabbed the rebound to secure the victory for the Bears.

 

“I’m proud of our team,” said Brown head coach Mike Martin. “We found a way to win on the road against a much improved Bryant team. Brandon and T (Choh) were terrific tonight, and Brandon made a big time shot at the end.”

 

Anderson’s 24 points came on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, while adding four steals. Choh posted a double-double with 20 points and a game high 13 rebounds, converted 11-of-14 free throws and handed out a team high four assists.

 

Brown sophomore David Mitchell (Roxbury, MA) scored a career high 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked a career best two shots. Senior Matt DeWolf (Barrington, RI) matched his career scoring high with 10 points, hitting 5-of-7 field gaols.

 

The Bulldogs were paced by Adam Grant, who tossed in 21 points. Bryant got double figure bench points from Michael Green (14 points) and Mikail Simmons (11 points).

 

Brown held a 34-33 lead at the half in an evenly played opening 20 minutes with huge point swings. The Bears opened the game with a 17-4 spurt and Bryant answered immediately with an 18-0 run. When the dust settled, Brown held a one-point advantage at intermission behind 11 points by Anderson and 10 points by Choh.

 

Brown opens its home season on Saturday afternoon, November 9, hosting Canisius at the Pizzitola Sports Center, starting at 4:30 pm on ESPN+ and WPRV AM 790 radio.
