Baker’s supplemental budget proposes $200M to address MBTA safety concerns

BOSTON (WLNE) — Gov. Charlie Baker filed a fiscal 2022 supplemental budget Wednesday that proposed an additional $200 million to support the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s work to address the Federal Transit Administrations’ safety orders.
The budget also proposes another $10 million to establish a training academy to address the MBTA’s staffing challenges.
Revenues in fiscal 2022 budget exceeded 2021 revenue collections by approximately 20.5%.
“With tax revenues coming in far above budgeted amounts this year, the Commonwealth is well-positioned to deliver relief to taxpayers, while still making investments in key areas, like transportation, as we close the fiscal year,” said Baker.
Other critical investments highlighted, include:
- $37.3 million for school safety
- $108 million for ongoing and future COVID resources
- $37 million for IT infrastructure
- $30 million for DCF guardian ad litem
- $20 million to support immigrants and refugees
Earlier this month, Baker announced the 30-day shutdown of the Orange Line, which will resume Sept. 19.
