PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – Member-elect for District 15 in the Rhode Island House of Representatives, Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung announced she will not be attending her inauguration following the news that her husband, former Cranston mayor, Allan Fung, tested positive for Coronavirus.

In a tweet, Fung said he tested positive after taking a precautionary COVID-19 test before the swearing-in ceremony of Mayor Ken Hopkins.

Member-elect Fenton-Fung said while she was previously ill with the disease, and has received a dose of the Moderna vaccine, she tested out of caution.

The results came back negative.

She consulted with her doctors and the Department of Health and decided she would not attend Tuesday’s inauguration.

She stated that many of her future colleagues have health vulnerabilities and would not want to do anything that made them feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Fenton-Fung informed Speaker-elect Joe Shekarchi of her decision and said he was very supportive.

A separate swearing-in will take place at a later date.
