Body of missing swimmer, 15, found in Westerly

WESTERLY, R.I. (WLNE) — The body of a missing 15-year-old swimmer was recovered in Westerly Sunday evening.

Westerly police said the body was found near Wawaloam Drive.

Police believe the boy either slipped on one of the rocks and went under or got pulled by one of the waves, which were made stronger by wind and storms.

Authorities searched for a missing swimmer at Dunes Park Beach in Westerly, Friday, July 28, 2023. (WLNE)

Multiple local emergency agencies and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for the boy for days.

The full search effort was suspended on Friday after a member of the Coast Guard said “we don’t think survivability is likely.”

The boy disappeared while swimming by the jetty at Dunes Park Beach with about a dozen family members on Thursday night. The family was swimming after-hours when there were no lifeguards on duty.

The boy was from New London, Connecticut.
