Briggs Goal Lifts PC Over Brown In Crosstown Women’s Soccer Showdown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s soccer team beat cross-city rival Brown, 1-0, on Thursday, Aug. 31 on Chapey Field at Anderson Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars start the season 4-0 for the first time since 1990 and posted a shutout in the first four games of the season for the first time in program history.

GAME FLOW AND NOTES 

– The game was scoreless through the first half. 

– Providence outshot Brown 6-3 in the first half, landing three of the six shots on goal. 

 Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) scored her first goal as Friar to take the 1-0 lead in the 68th minute. Maria Paveglio (Lake Orion, Mich.) and Thaea Mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada) earned the assists on the goal.  

– The Friars outshot Brown 6-5 in the second half and 12-8 overall. 

– Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) combined for three saves in the victory. McElroy earned his second career NCAA win and first with the Friars.

1-0 – (Providence) – 67:27 – Kayla Briggs headed the ball in on a cross pass from Maria Paveglio who got possession off a feed from Thaea Mouratidis.
