Brown Upsets Providence For Head Coach Chase Wileman’s First Win With Bears

The Brown men’s soccer team defeated Providence 1-0 on the road Saturday evening in Friends of Brown Men’s Soccer Head Coaching Chair Chase Wileman’s first career victory as a head coach.

“It was a fantastic result tonight,” Wileman said. “I’m unbelievably proud of the team and the program. We have a ton of respect for Providence. We came here with a plan and clear tactics to try to limit their chances. Tonight, I just think the guys executed the game plan perfectly. I’m so proud of them and all the hard work that we’ve put in.”

The win was Brown’s first over Providence since 2018 and the first on the road against the Friars since 2015.

In complete opposite fashion from the first game of the season, the Bears were outshot and earned less corners than the opposition, but were still able to pull out the victory.

The lone goal of the match came in the 15th minute when Scott Gustafson targeted Jamin Gogo Peters with a long pass down the left flank. Gogo Peters split a pair of defenders on his way into the 18-yard box, worked towards the end line and sent a cross into the six that deflected off the chest of a Friar defender and into the net.

That was all the Bears would need as they locked things down on defense for the rest of the match to come away with the 1-0 victory.

The Friars held the advantage in shots 19-2, 7-1 on goal, and in corners, 7-2.

Connor Smith was strong in goal for Brown, making seven saves to pick up his first career victory and first career shutout.

“Honestly, it’s the proudest day that I’ve ever had in soccer,” Wileman said. “I just think the guys covered every inch of this turf. They fought, they battled, they blocked shots. It was such a great result, and now we just have to follow that up and try to be consistent the rest of the season.”

The Bears return to action next Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. against UMass Lowell for their first home game of the season at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
