Brown Women’s Soccer Clinches Ivy League Tournament Spot

A goal from Naya Cardoza in the 75th minute gave the Brown women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Cornell and a spot in the Ivy League Tournament.

“To be honest I thought the wind played a lot more of a factor than we anticipated going into the game,” head coach Kia McNeill said. “I thought we got pinned in our half a little bit in the first half and our formation didn’t match up with Cornell’s so we made a couple of switches at halftime and it allowed us to get more pressure on their backs.”

Cardoza found the back of the net off of a corner kick after the cross found Lexi Quinn, Quinn headed the ball to Cardoza who was able to find the back of the net.

In the first half, Brown had an early chance to take a 1-0 lead off a header by Joy Okonye, but her shot was pushed aside by the Cornell goalkeeper Erica Fox. Two minutes later, Karlie Schlosser gave Brown another chance to get on the board but her shot was also stopped by Fox.

Brown ended up with six shots on target in the opening 45 minutes while Cornell generated three. All three of Cornell’s shots were stopped by Bella Schopp.

The Bears took to the offensive in the second half as they generated 11 shots, their 10th shot of the half belonged to Cardoza, who was able to find the back of the net for the second time this season. Cardoza’s first goal of the season came back on Sept. 8 at Minnesota in the 86th minute, her goal preserved a 1-1 draw for the Bears.

Overall, the Beats out shot the Big Red 17-6 and Bella Schopp recorded four saves in the shutout. The Bears have given up just one goal over the last four contests and recorded their fifth shutout of the season.

“It’s a weight lifted off of our shoulders,” McNeill added. “I think this whole time we were playing to get to this position and now that we’re here we can take a deep breath know that we have more to play for.”

The Bears finish their home schedule after going 5-0-2 at Stevenson-Pincince Field this season.

Brown will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Dartmouth, kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
