Brown’s Mahoney & Moorhead Earn Ivy League Player of the Week Honors
Brown University Press Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two Brown football players have been recognized by the Ivy League for their performances in Saturday’s 28-27 overtime thriller against Princeton. Senior wide receiver Mark Mahoney has been named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week while junior linebacker Caleb Moorhead has been named the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Both athletes played critical roles in the Bears’ fourth quarter rally and overtime victory. Mahoney stepped up as Brown’s top target in the game, setting new career-highs with nine catches and 153 yards receiving, including the game-tying 51-yard touchdown catch and run in the final minute of regulation. His numbers surpassed his previous career-highs of six caches and 76 yards, coming against a Princeton defense that entered Saturday as the No. 6 passing defense and No. 1 total defense in all of FCS Football. Mahoney’s efforts also earned him a spot on the honorable mention list for the Stats Peform FCS National Awards this week.
Moorhead came up with one of the biggest plays of the season in overtime for the Bears, coming off the left end of the line and blocking Princeton’s extra point attempt after they scored a touchdown on their first OT possession. The block kept the Tigers lead at six, which allowed Brown to win the game with a touchdown and extra point of their own on the ensuing possession. Overall, Moorhead tied for second on the team with 5.0 tackles and added 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hit in the game.
Brown landed two others players on this week’s Honor Roll in quarterback Jake Willcox and defensive back Isaiah Reed. Willcox, who previously won a Gold Helmet from the New England Football Writers, went 38-for-60 for 378 yards and three touchdowns, and Reed totaled 5.0 tackles and grabbed an interception.
Brown will head to Cornell this Saturday for an Ivy League showdown at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
