Cliff Walk partially reopened after sinkhole discovery

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The city of Newport has announced that the Cliff Walk is back open after a sinkhole was discovered.

Repairs were made to the Cliff Walk following the discovery of the hole beneath a section of concrete sidewalk that runs along the most scenic and remote section near the Miramar Estate.

Hikers were alerted to the closure at Marine Avenue to the North and Ledge Road to the South.

The Schwarzman family funded the repairs, according to the city in a Facebook post.

Stephen Schwarzman bought Miramar estate on the Cliff Walk three years ago for $27 million.

“A huge thanks to all involved to get this project to completion: From our volunteer who first brought the potential hazard to the attention of the City, to the property owners, who were able to secure the proper State approvals and generously funded the repairs,” the post noted.

“We simply wouldn’t have been able to get this section of walkway reopened in time for summer if not for the incredible spirit of community that surrounds the Cliff Walk,” it said.

The city is still currently repairing a portion of the Cliff Walk that collapsed back in May of 2022.
