Cumberland man accused of posing as Uber driver charged in 7 more sex assaults

BOSTON (WLNE) A Cumberland man accused of posing as an Uber driver, then kidnapping and raping an intoxicated woman, has been charged with similar crimes against seven additional women, prosecutors said on Thursday.
Alvin Campbell Jr., 39, had been accused by prosecutors in January with posing as an Uber driver in Boston, where he picked up an intoxicated woman and brought her against her will to his Cumberland home and allegedly raped her.
Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins said today that evidence uncovered during the investigation of that incident revealed Campbell had allegedly been involved in similar incidents with seven different women between 2017 and 2019.
According to the statement, Campbell stopped working for the ride-sharing company in 2016, but his car was still covered in Uber stickers when it was seized earlier this year as part of the earlier investigation.
Most of the alleged assaults took place in Campbell’s car, the district attorney’s office said, and during the investigation, evidence surfaced that he took video of five of the victims.
“The attacks on these women are the acts of a predator,” Rollins said. “Women are entitled to go out and enjoy themselves without the fear of being preyed upon, kidnapped or raped. With one exception, these women did not know each other. They shared in common only that each were out enjoying nightlife in Boston when Campbell found and violated them. Now, they are linked by those horrific assaults. But these eight women are also linked due to the incredible bravery and courage they each displayed coming forward to hold their rapist accountable.”
Campbell has since been held on $250,000 bail, the district attorney said. He will now face “criminal complaints in three Boston Municipal courts – Central, Roxbury and South Boston – for multiple charges of rape, kidnapping and recording a nude person without consent,” according to the statement.
