‘Devoted, loving dad’: Son of cab driver murdered by Pawtucket man gives statement at sentencing

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — A Pawtucket man convicted in the 2019 shooting murder of a Boston cab driver was sentenced to state prison Friday.
Phillip Foy, 40, will serve a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
During a victim impact statement, the son of victim Luckinson Oruma said his father was a “hardworking, devoted, loving dad.”
He also said that Oruma was murdered while “he was doing what he always did, working hard to provide,” saying that Oruma put five kids through college driving a cab.
Foy murdered Oruma, 60, on June 4, 2019 after an altercation outside of the Colonnade Hotel on Huntington Avenue in Boston.
Foy entered Oruma’s cab and requested a ride to Mansfield, and Oruma declined the fare.
Foy then exited the vehicle, opened the driver’s side door and assaulted Oruma before pulling out a firearm and shooting the driver.
He then stood over Oruma and fired directly at him, entered the cab and drove to Ring Road and parked before emptying and discarding the gun and magazine.
He then removed his shoes and sat in front of a nearby Starbucks where law enforcement arrived a short time later.
Foy then grabbed a pedestrian and attempted to use the person to shield himself before police diffused the situation and arrested the suspect.
Foy confessed to the shooting but claimed self-defense.
