PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — An East Providence man facing an attempted murder charge for allegedly attacking a man with a hammer has a court hearing Monday.

Kenneth Jackson, 47, has a pre-arraignment conference in Providence County Superior Court.

He is accused of hitting a 74-year-old man in the back of the head with a hammer in an unprovoked attack.

The alleged incident happened in the parking lot of a shopping plaza on Willet Avenue on July 5.

A witness told East Providence police they saw Jackson standing over another man with a hammer in his hand. Jackson was shortly taken into custody.

The victim, also an East Providence resident, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators later obtained video surveillance footage from the Shaw’s market in the plaza which showed Jackson and the victim walking away from the neighboring Dollar Tree store. The footage allegedly showed Jackson hitting the man in the back of the head with a hammer.

When police were able to search Jackson’s apartment, they reportedly found a letter in which he planned to kill someone that day.

Jackson was charged with one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of assault on a person over the age of 60, and one count of disorderly conduct.
