BROOKLINE, Mass. (WLNE) — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced Friday that West Nile virus had been found in mosquitos in the state for the first time this year.

The department said the virus was found in a sample collected on July 6 in Brookline in Norfolk County.

West Nile virus is usually transmitted to humans by mosquitos and can result in fever and flu-like symptoms, as well as more advanced illness. People over the age of 50 are at higher risk of severe illness.

The DPH is advising all residents to take steps to avoid mosquito bites and protect their families and pets.

These steps include applying insect repellant, being aware of peak mosquito hours between dusk and dawn, wearing long-sleeved clothing, draining standing water to prevent egg-laying, and installing or repairing window screens.

This is the first instance of West Nile virus or Eastern equine encephalitis found in Massachusetts or Rhode Island this year.

The department said there were 10 cases of the virus in the state in 2022.
