Former Cumberland High School students react: Gym teacher, volunteer football coach resigning to avoid firing

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE)  — To some former Cumberland High School students the news of a former gym teacher and volunteer football coach resigning to avoid being fired was not a surprise.

One former student, who graduated in 2021, said, “I’ve heard people talking about him like Snapchatting people or Instagram direct message.”

Cumberland Superintendent Dr. Phillip Thornton confirmed to ABC 6 News on Tuesday that Christopher Skurka’s resignation was effective Aug. 12.

Another student said, “It’s been really ongoing since I joined the high school. I’ve heard stuff right up until I graduated, but I never really looked into that stuff.”

Skurka was slated to be a volunteer high school football coach this fall.

“Rumors always have meaning. Where there’s smoke there’s fire, I don’t think its that surprising to anybody,” a student said.
