Four JWU Wrestlers Named All Americans at NCAAs in Providence, Wildcats in First Place Entering Day Two
– The JWU (Providence) wrestling program crowned four All-Americans and on day one of the 2025 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships at the Amica Mutual Pavilion: Joziah Fry, Hayden Brown, Adolfo Betancur, and Dylan Harr. The Wildcats point total of 49.5 has them in first place heading into the final day of competition, ahead of both Wartburg (48.5) and Augsburg (46).
Betancur – who grew up in nearby Johnson – battled back after dropping his second match of the day to win three-straight in the wrestleback round to secure the first All-America honor of his career. He squared off against Walter West of Luther – who defeated Betancur earlier this season by a score of 2-1 – and grabbed the lead with a takedown in the first round. He held on to defeat West 4-2, which set off a frenzy amongst the large JWU crowd in attendance.
Fry, meanwhile, is shooting for his third-straight All-America honor and is off to a hot start, cruising to wins over Kaden Majcher of Lycoming (19-3 tech fall in 5:21) and Quintin Wollert of Wis.-La Crosse (21-7 major decision). The Coventry, Rhode Island native and No. 1 seed will take on No. 4 seed Mason Barrett (Averett) in the semifinals Saturday morning.
Brown – a senior from Exeter, New Hampshire – picked up his third All-America honor with wins over Chase Fisher of Loras (11-2 major decision), Chance Babb of Alvernia (6-0 decision), and Tyler Herrera of Olivet (fall in 3:11). Up next for Brown is a date with No. 4 seed Matt Randolph of Augsburg.
Harr went 2-1 on the day, securing a first-round pin of Ian Pepple (Wis-Eau Claire) before falling into the wrestleback following an 8-1 loss to No. 2 seed Cameron Butka (Wilkes). The Mohnton, Pennsylvania native closed the day with a pin of Blaise Wagner (Stevens) in 2:09, advancing him to face No. 3 seed Ben Kawczynski (Wis.-La Crosse) on Saturday.
Three JWU student-athletes – freshman Peyton Ellis, junior Jake Eckerle, and sophomore Jack Richardson – were eliminated from the tournament.
